‘Benefit of the doubt… for now’ - Labour's first budget in 14 years left much to be desired, but was not enough to be dismissed entirely
One of the most challenging aspects leading up to Rachel Reeves' budget, since Labour took office, was also an example of how budgets ideally should be managed.
Under the Conservatives, Treasury details would often leak weeks, even months, in advance. This was likely due to a lack of discipline within the cabinet or Treasury, attempts at media management, or a fear of market volatility. Worse still, these leaks sometimes seemed like an opportunity for the Conservatives to boast about their budgetary control—even though their fiscal policies often ended up being detrimental for the rest of us.
Labour was, thankfully, different.
Sort of. At least for a bit until they couldn’t help themselves.
