When The Tories Weaponise Marginal Issues and Nobody Seems 'That' Interested
I've pointed towards Oliver Dowden on this page a few times - he appears to be the chief architect of the Conservative Party’s approach moving forward in implementing this Trumpian ‘Big Story!’ approach - ridiculous stories that will never happen like the government’s intention to have a ‘Margaret Thatcher Day’ designed with the intention of distracting from central issues the party is failing to tackle.
An example came on the eve of April Fool’s Day when the government backtracked on plans to ban conversion therapy despite previous pledges that date back to 2018.
A partial u-turn on a u-turn, if you like.
It’s an important issue.
Conversion therapy is, for want of a better word, horrific - and Conservatives agree, which makes it all the more staggering that Boris Johnson would consider the possibility of even u-turning on the pledge.
Consider the possibility that it was always designed to be a sham, and that when it was first described as ’abhorrent’ by the government in December, it was always going to be ‘one of those issues’ that will get pulled out on the eve of April Fool’s Day at that opportune moment that causes offence to… well, just about everybody.
Including Michael Fabricant.
Consider also the possibility that nobody knew that Boris Johnson was going to do it, too - least of all Elizabeth “Liz” Truss who was apparently “kept in the dark” on the matter, and the “50 or 60” alleged Conservatives who were ‘up in arms’ about the u-turn, which was later subsequently u-turned on - uh, again.
Also consider the possibility that - as per previous article - Jacob Rees-Mogg and Conservatives like Rees-Mogg believe that ultimately, and irrespective of the outrage that certain stories may cause, nobody besides voters can actually do anything about how contemptuous it was and will just have to wait until any future general election to say it.
