“As negotiations and peace talks proceed between Ukraine and Russia, you have to ask whether there are likely some within the government - and outside of it, too - who are extremely grateful for this. Least of all because it means they won’t have to be dragged kicking and screaming into taking further, more punishing [and self-harming] actions against a regime they are either actively colluding with, or with whom they seek appeasement.”

A strange thing, this.

I wrote it nearly two weeks ago.

It was in the Sunday Telegraph where Elizabeth “Liz” Truss noted that sanctions against Russia could be lifted if Vladimir Putin withdraws from Ukraine and commits to "no further aggression."

It seems awfully cynical that there would be such a rush to alleviate some of the pressure off Vladimir Putin. [Although the Telegraph adds that caveat that Truss’ words chime with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken]

Especially so when we're looking at a particularly brutal and bloody conflict that has resulted in the needless deaths of thousands of innocent people, unspeakable collateral damage and innumerable atrocities.

But we can ignore that, right?
