The most obvious problem with the government's 'Small Boats week’ is that ‘boats’ - along with the people on them - have not been stopped from coming to the UK nor are they likely to stop coming in the foreseeable future.

It was supposed to be an important moment for the Conservatives, too - symbolic in light of some of the most recent polling that appears to suggest that most people tend to think of the beleaguered party as a laughing stock.

It had to go smoothly; it had to work.

There was just one small problem, however. It was never going to. The Prime Minister was out of the country on holiday, the kids were left in charge with the keys to the cabinet office, it could mean only one thing - chaos.
