Last Thursday [December 1] there was a by-election in Chester - and it was significant for a number of reasons. 

For a start, it was Rishi Sunak’s first real test at the ballots to see whether or not there has been any noticeable bounce on the effect the new Prime Minister has had on his party’s fortunes since the departure of both Boris Johnson and Liz Truss.
