This week’s main ‘red meat’ announcement has been a long-running finger-pointing exercise on this page - that the government was going to go full spin on the flagship Police Uplift Programme and announce that 20,000 new police officers had finally been recruited. 

This page has been keeping an eye on the numbers for a while now - the fascination first began in earnest some time ago, and many articles featured on this page have at the very least alluded to the policy in some form or another for over a year. 

So - along with the third reading of the government’s very literal ‘Illegal’ Migration Bill, it came as some surprise to me on Wednesday that the government considered it a Conservative success story.
