In Too Deep: Or, 'How really big scandals dwarf super naive politicians'
The Zahawi Scandal Part II - of probably many
My last piece was fairly long and winding, and it went off in many different directions but to reflect back on it, one of the broader points made in the piece was that when it comes to Tory Party Rot & Scandal - well, we've been here many, many times before.
Especially so in the last several years.
That is not to say that ‘scandal’ has become normalised or the effects of ‘scandal(s)’ have dulled our senses somewhat. The tax affairs of Nadhim Zahawi have taken on a life of their own and can stand alongside others that have occurred in the last several years on their own merit.
What’s different about the situation now is that we are supposed to have a grown-up in charge of events (according to the Conservative Party) - and how this grown-up is supposed to deal with seismic events (like those involving Zahawi and elsewhere) is different to how, say, Boris Johnson dealt with events.
This is, after all, why Conservatives selected Rishi Sunak as their leader. It was all part of that process of ‘moving on’.
