Birds of a Feather: Voters will notice that some things never change when it comes to the almost unique topic of 'Tory Sleaze'
Everybody expects Dominic Raab to either be sacked, be forced to resign, or wilfully go of his own volition following the conclusions of an investigation into his workplace conduct which are expected to be revealed soon.
Depending on the time-frame, and how it is choreographed, it’ll be just another matter that Sunak would rather not have to contend with going into the local elections - that distracts completely away from the issues facing most Britons.
‘Sleaze’ is the catch-all term for it; there was Nadhim Zahawi, allegations surrounding the conduct of Gavin Williamson, outstanding and unresolved issues that relate to ‘Pestminster’ [including serious allegations of rape], the past conduct of Somerton and Frome MP David Warburton, the lunacy of Andrew Bridgen, investigations ongoing with Scott Benton, Matt Hancock and Henry Smith, even Suella Braverman still faces questions over the matter of potential illegalities relating to the Manston detention facility.
Readers feel free to point out something I may have missed and say, ‘and what about…’ - Alok Sharma caught in a bullying scandal of his own? Any number of MPs operating at the behest of the gambling lobby? Sorry, which Health minister’s wife works for a private health firm in receipt of NHS contracts? Oh! It’s Huddersfield MP Neil O’Brien.
Take your pick - and what’s striking about it is that it’s almost unique to the Conservative Party, and no, the argument that ‘they’re all the same’ doesn’t wash.
The point is that the list of ‘quiet issues’ - or, issues that exist, and everybody knows exist, but politics carries on regardless - is seemingly endless when it comes to the Conservatives.
And then there’s Dominic Raab.
